Why it’s important to have regular dental check-ups

It’s important to have regular dental check-ups as this can help ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy. You should see your dentist at least once every 6 months or follow your dental professional’s instructions for regular dental appointments.

What happens when I go to my dental appointment?

The process of regular medical appointments is divided into two parts – an examination and scaling (also known as cleaning).

During the dental check-up, your dental professional will check for tooth decay. X-rays may be used to detect cavities between teeth. The test also includes a plaque and tartar examination on the teeth. Plaque is a sticky, transparent layer of bacteria. If plaque is not removed, it will harden and turn into tartar. Brushing or flossing will not remove tartar. If plaque and tartar accumulate on your teeth, it can cause oral disease.

Next, your dentist will examine your gums. During a gum exam, the depth of the gap between your teeth and gums is measured with the help of a special tool. If the gums are healthy, the gap is shallow. When people suffer from gum disease, these crevices deepen.

The procedure also includes a careful examination of the tongue, throat, face, head and neck. The purpose of these tests is to look for any precursors of illness such as swelling, redness, or cancer.

Your dentist will also clean your teeth during your appointment. Brushing and flossing at home can help remove plaque from your teeth, but you can’t remove tartar at home. During the scaling process, your dental professional will use special tools to remove the tartar. This process is called curettage.

After the scaling is complete, your teeth may be polished. In most cases, polishing paste is used. It can help remove any stains on the surface of the teeth. The final step is to floss. Your dental professional will floss to ensure that the area between the teeth is cleaned.
